CU Boulder’s Large File Transfer service is getting an upgrade as OIT is replacing the software behind the service with a newer, more secure platform. The new Large File Transfer service will run on Accellion’s Kiteworks platform which offers secure file sharing with a more modern interface.
Those who use the Large File Transfer service will still use the same URL to reach the service after the upgrade. All workspaces on the old platform will be transferred to the new platform; however, it will be necessary to reshare files if they weren’t downloaded by recipients before the switchover to the new platform. More information will be sent directly to recent users of the service.
The move to Kiteworks was in part precipitated by a cyberattack on Accellion’s File Transfer Appliance (FTA) which is the software that CU Boulder’s Large File Transfer service currently utilizes. OIT rebuilt the Large File Transfer service on a new system using a newly released version of the software. Having followed Accellion’s recommendations in restoring the appliance, we have been assured the service is secure and stable. However, OIT decided to prioritize a project to move the Large File Transfer service to Kiteworks, which was not affected by the cyberattack.
Regardless of the way that you share files, when you share highly confidential information, we recommend that you protect your files with password-protection or through encryption. Certain research data and HIPAA and payment card industry (PCI), require these extra protections.
