Microsoft Stream Is Replacing Office 365 Video

Submitted by stauffeg on

Last year Microsoft announced that Microsoft Stream would replace Office 365 Video as its enterprise video-sharing service. Starting September 12, all CU Boulder faculty, staff and students will be given licenses to use Microsoft Stream.

Microsoft Stream has the same sharing options that Video has, making it ideal for a business environment, but it has new features that make it a better option than Video. Stream provides speech-to-text transcribed audio that's searchable, face detection in videos, and linked timecodes. The Stream user interface also has more granular management controls than Video.

All CU Boulder users with an Office 365 account can upload to Stream and share videos with other CU Boulder users. Please note, Microsoft Stream videos cannot currently be shared with users outside of CU Boulder. If you require a channel to post videos which you can restrict to certain users (to view or post videos), then you should request a channel using the following process:

To request a channel in Stream, send an email to help@colorado.edu with the following information:

  • The name and CULoginName of the Channel Administrator responsible for managing the Stream channel
  • The name and CULoginName of a backup Channel Administrator responsible for managing the Stream channel
  • A proposed display name and description for the channel
    • Note: Channel names should follow the naming convention Department - Unit (e.g. OIT - Human Resources or Athletics - Baseball). If you are unsure what the name of your channel should be, OIT staff will assist in finding the appropriate name for your channel.

An OIT specialist will create the Stream channel and get in touch with you once it is created.

You can learn more about getting started with Microsoft Stream on their webpage. If you have questions about Microsoft Stream or Microsoft Office 365 Video, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).
