Capital Projects

When does OIT need to get involved?

OIT can help address scope and site questions as early as Concept and Feasibility phases, and reviews all project drawings, COB's, ASI's etc. from Schematic Design phase (SD) through Construction Documents (CD), as well as final closeout/record documents.

What labor does OIT charge to projects?

For wired voice & data networking in capital projects, we charge for project design, review, project management, and CAD/closeout work:

  • Design & Review are both $78/hour
  • Project Management is $80/hour
  • CAD & closeout work is $45/hour.
  • All of the above will be charged in 15-minute increments.

What does my project have to pay for?

Capital project budgets typically pay for all technology elements, including the Cisco VoIP phones, wired network cabling and supporting infrastructure, wireless access points and their mounting hardware, as well as AV systems. OIT purchases many of those items directly to ensure standardization and that all current educational discounts are applied, then provides them to contractors for installation. Some items however must be installed by OIT personnel. Consult with OIT as needed for specifics per project.

Can I have an initial estimate?

For capital projects, formal IT estimates aren't built until approx. 50% Design Development (DD) phase, and typically do not include AV systems. Prior to DD phase, OIT will work with Facilities Management's Planning dept. and the Project Manager on budget models and preliminary estimates.

What changes do I need to know about?

As of 2018, all classrooms in new capital construction or renovations will be Centrally Scheduled. Accordingly, classroom technology like AV systems must be supportable by OIT. How long does it take to activate a jack?

Once the IT rooms (MDF & IDF’s) are ready for network electronics to be installed, we typically need three (3) weeks to complete that installation, testing, activations, and any specific IP# and subnet assignments.

Can OIT help with digital signage in a lobby?

As of 2018, oversight for digital signage on the Boulder campus has transitioned to the Office of Strategic Relations. Please note that accessibility requirements apply to digital signs, both for their physical installation and content delivery.

Non-Capital Projects

When does OIT need to get involved?

OIT can help ensure your technology needs are met starting with the initial design concepts, and we can help define functional requirements. Our roles can vary depending on the scope of your project, whether you'll have a Technology design consultant, and other factors. When in doubt, the earlier the better!

What are OIT's voice & data jack rates?

The following rates are for wired voice & data networking, up to a maximum of six (6) locations in a single project:  

  • New voice/data service location including new IT cable pathway is not to exceed $360 per jack.
  • Adding a new jack to an existing service location with available capacity is not to exceed $200 per jack.
  • Removal/demo of a voice/data service location (including the outlet, cabling, and faceplate) varies between $80 and $140 per location depending on whether IT cable pathway is also being removed.

Note: These rates do not reflect potential charges related to unforeseen work due to asbestos abatement or EH&S charges.

What does OIT charge for AV work?

What does my project have to pay for?

Non-capital project budgets typically pay for:

  • The wired voice & data networking, see rates above
  • Wi-Fi changes necessitated by the scope of the project (which can include areas outside the project footprint if coverage is affected)
  • Audiovisual solutions part of project scope
Can I have an initial estimate?

For voice & data work on non-capital projects, some info is provided via service rates above. Once wired and Wi-Fi scope is defined, OIT walks the site with Telecom contractors (SOC’s), and the lowest bid is awarded. That bid is passed on to the project at no markup. OIT only adds charges for our staff time on IT Design & Review, Project Management, and CAD/closeout work. Estimates can be provided once scope is defined and we have the winning contractor price.

How long does it take to activate a jack?

For less than six different jacks or jack locations, the average time from initial Service Request to completed and active jacks is three weeks.

Please Note: For an additional $100 we can rush this work, typically completing in one week (depending on project workload).

For larger (but still non-capital) projects, activation can take longer depending on variables such as whether Wi-Fi is impacted, and whether an additional network switch is required to support the number of added services/jacks. OIT’s construction project managers can facilitate schedule updates from our contractors. Once their work is complete and OIT has approved the test results, activation work is typically completed within the following week.
