Oct. 16 Network Registration: Keeping Campus Networks Safe

Submitted by stauffeg on

OIT periodically requires network authentication in order to provide a safe network for all CU Boulder network users. Starting October 16, devices that are new to campus networks since mid-August will be required to register when first attempting to connect to the Resnet wired network, or the UCB Wireless and Eduroam wireless networks. Please note, students, faculty, and staff who have never authenticated to these networks will also have to do so starting October 16.

Starting October 16, owners of affected devices should note that:

  • a network registration page will automatically open upon using a web browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, etc.);
  • you may need to open an off-campus website—one that starts with http: and not https: (e.g. to www.colorado.edu or http://neverssl.com)—in order to prompt the registration page to open;
  • many programs (including Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail) will not connect and function properly until a web browser is opened and the device owner registers;
  • your CU Boulder username and IdentiKey password must be entered on the network registration page before connecting to the aforementioned networks.

Headless systems—computers and devices that operate without a monitor, keyboard or mouse (e.g. printers, gaming systems, etc.)—should not be affected by the resumption of network registration as these devices are generally allowed on the network without authentication. If you have questions about network registration or ever experience issues connecting to the campus networks, please contact the IT Service Center at help@colorado.edu or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from a campus phone).
