OIT is committed to supporting remote and flexible teaching and learning, and is preparing several solutions for fall 2020. Some OIT managed computer labs, traditionally used for in-person teaching, have limitations that make them a challenge to access remotely. In order to develop specific solutions for these labs, OIT is actively seeking input from faculty who teach identified pathway courses that affect a large number of students.
It may be helpful to review the list of software provided by computer labs.
For more information about the software available in the OIT managed computer labs, contact the IT Service Center at oithelp@colorado.edu or 303-735-4357.
Project Update June 25, 2020
At this time, 32 responses have been received, most of which referenced software that is currently available and has not been disrupted due to the pandemic. For example, Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Pro are available to all CU Boulder employees and students. Software such as Canvas, PlayPosit and Kaltura are SaaS (software as a service) applications and run in browsers or integrations with Canvas, and are also readily available. Zotero is a free application available to anyone.
Most lab-specific software mentioned is already available through multiple methods, including Stata 16, Mathematica, and MATLAB. Licenses for MATLAB and Mathematica are provided at no cost through OIT. Students who would typically use a campus computer lab to access MATLAB, Mathematica, and Stata 16 can do so virtually if they are registered for a class that utilizes that lab.
Some responses requested software specific to Apple computer labs, such as Final Cut Pro. OIT is close to a solution that will allow students to access Apple lab computers in the same way that they currently access Windows lab computers remotely; we anticipate this solution to be forthcoming soon. For an update, contact oit-labs-req@colorado.edu.
Adobe Creative Cloud is also a special case, for both Windows and Mac computers, due to Adobe licensing restrictions, which prohibit using the software remotely or virtually. In order to access Adobe CC off-campus, a Named User license (and not a Shared Device License) must be used. This may increase the cost of licensing. To help mitigate the cost impact to departments, OIT will offer a discounted bulk price for Named User licenses, should a department wish to manage their own pool of Adobe CC licenses. Please see the Adobe FAQ page for more information, or contact oitsoftware@colorado.edu.
